    WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:Working under the direction of the Bureau Administrator, Fire Training Specialists play a vital role in coordinating Fire Service Training, Fire Prevention and Community Risk Reduction initiatives, and Public Education programs. Key responsibilities include:

    Minimum Qualifications

    An associate degree or the equivalent from an accredited institution in Fire Science Technology or a closely related field;
    AND
    Three years of fire prevention or suppression experience, one year of which was in a capacity as a trainer or instructor.

    Substitution:
    Additional fire prevention or suppression experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

    Special Note:
    Certification as a fire service instructor is desirable.

Mileage reimbursement is available when a personal vehicle is used for work-related matters. Current automotive insurance must be in place prior to use of a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the state.

    Minimum Qualifications

    One year of experience conducting fire and life safety inspections and fire investigations. This is met by service as a Deputy Fire Marshal 2 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent with another employer.
     
    At the time of hire applicants must meet the following:
    Personal History
    Citizen of the United States of America
     
    Possession of high school diploma recognized by a state, diploma from a home school program recognized or certified by a state or by a local school district within a state as having met the state's graduation requirements, or has passed a General Education Development (GED) test.
     
    21 years of age or older at the time of Academy.
     
    Possession of a valid driver's license.
     
    Not disqualified from any portion of a prior formal background investigation conducted for this job classification in the last twelve months.
     
    Prior Use of Illegal/Illicit Substances
    Not used, transported or purchased schedule IA, IIA, IIIA, IVA, or VA controlled substance during the last ten (10) years (unless under the age of 21 at the time of use AND the act occurred more than 3 years from date of application OR there was an immediate, pressing, or emergency medical circumstance to justify the use of a prescription controlled substance not prescribed to the person).
     
    Not used marijuana during the past twelve months.
     
    Not illegally manufactured, transported, or sold a controlled substance (unless under 21 at the time of the act AND the act occurred more than 10 years ago).

    Not received more than three fish and wildlife enforcement citations within the three years before the date of this application.

    Never discharged or resigned under threat of discharge, for cause relating to dishonesty or misconduct, from employment as a police officer in this state or any other state or territory.
     
    Not illegally manufactured, distributed, or sold a controlled substance while employed as a peace officer or in a position associated with law enforcement.
     
    Special Note:
    For purposes of the minimum qualifications for this job classification:
    Convictions or court ordered probation are recognized as either by civilian court in Alaska, the United States, or another state or territory, or by a military court.
     
    Misdemeanors are recognized as:

    The City of Homer is accepting applications for a Full-Time Deputy Fire Chief.  The position requires; Eight years’ experience and extensive knowledge of emergency services, including fire and rescue services with at least three years at Captain or higher rank.  Certified as an IFSAC or Pro Board Firefighter II, Certified in Methods of Instruction in Fire with demonstrated instructor competency, EMS experience required (EMT II/III/or paramedic preferred).  Associates Degree in Fire Science, Business, Emergency Management or similar field, or equivalent in experience.  Enrollment in or graduation from the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program preferred. Experience with combination (paid/volunteer) departments desired. Strong interpersonal skills required for training and working with volunteers. Valid Driver’s License required.

The position acts as lead medic on ems calls, provides initial response to fire, rescue and hazardous materials in the Chena-Goldstream Fire and EMS Service areas and establishes Command of the incident until relieved by a superior officer. Performs daily fire department business, facility & equipment maintenance and equipment checks. The position requires attendance at all weekly and assigned training classes and participates as an instructor. The position calls for working 48 hours on/96 hours off rotating shift or 8 hours per day/40 hours per week schedule. Typical activities include; Technical fire and emergency duties at all levels, including fire suppression, hazardous material, public education, and emergency medical service.
