University Fire Department: Assistant Fire Marshal

7 Dec 2023 8:13 AM | Forrest Kuiper (Administrator)

Greetings from the University Fire Marshal’s Office,

I’m excited to announce that the University Fire Department is now recruiting for the full-time, represented staff benefitted, position of Assistant Fire Marshal, located at the UAF Troth Yeddha’ Campus in Fairbanks Alaska. You can find the full job announcement and posting at https://careers.alaska.edu/en-us/job/527347/assistant-fire-marshal.

The Assistant Fire Marshal (AFM) will be responsible, and assisting the UAF Fire Marshal, with fire and building inspections, plan reviews, fire investigations, Clery/HEO Act duties, and public fire and life safety education to our UAF campuses. Fire department work experience, while helpful, is not necessarily required if you have a strong background in other closely related fields such as construction management, building/fire safety & prevention on campuses (hospital, military, higher-ed, etc.) or other similar fields. The AFM is a part of a team that leads our student employee program, sharing their experience and expertise to prepare them for their career after attainment of their higher education goals.

Application of the fire and building codes in our nation’s premier arctic research environment add to the rich experience you will have as the Assistant Fire Marshal – I find it awesome that one day I might be inspecting our museum and seeing a carnivorous dinosaur skeleton on someone’s desk, the next day working with our NASA partners at Poker Flat Research Range for their sounding rocket program, and the next day after I’m problem solving on how safely to feed amoebas methane or protect hibernating squirrels to support research. Working for UAF and the University Fire Department has been a rewarding experience that is making impacts to our community, our state, and our nation. We’re proud so many families choose UAF, knowing we’re maintaining a safe and supportive built-environment protecting them while they learn, study, and educate for Alaska.

For a full description, responsibilities, requirements, qualifications, including those that are preferred, please refer to the Assistant Fire Marshal job description and posting at https://careers.alaska.edu/en-us/job/527347/assistant-fire-marshal and apply today! The position is open until filled. The first review of applications will occur on Monday, January 8, 2024. To ensure consideration, please apply before 11:55PM, Alaska Standard Time on Sunday January 7, 2024.

Prospective candidates are welcomed to contact me for any questions, or Lee Ann Amerson, HR Coordinator at lamerson@alaska.edu or 907-474-6664.
